Maya was not playing. As soon as they’d walked into the small ballroom on the eighth floor, she’d brushed a kiss to Kenny’s cheek and then followed after a waiter without a second glance.

“Good luck saving the world,” she’d whispered before abandoning him.

Kenny wanted to follow her and make sure that she stayed right by his side. But actually, he realized as soon as one of Prince Mohammed’s bodyguards came to fetch him, this was for the best. As if she knew that he would be anxious, she made sure to stay in his line of sight and as usually happened, the room seemed to orbit around her. She was close to the door leading to the kitchen and seemed to have charmed all the waiters into giving her first pick of each new dish and making sure she had a fresh glass of champagne when she needed it. Maya looked like she was in heaven. Kenny was focused on the mission, but he never let her out of his peripheral vision.

“Please, Mr. Zhang,” Prince Mohammed said. “Let us get to business. Our meeting here was not a coincidence, yes?”

Kenny smiled affably, “No, it wasn’t.”

“I am assuming that you have a proposal for me?” The Prince sounded… tired. That was an unexpected realization.

In the split second he had to consider his answer, Kenny’s brain sifted through every bit of intel he’d read over the past few months. Mohammed was the eldest son of the current king of Qatar. His family had ruled the country for almost ninety years. His father’s efforts at modernization had been frustrated not by legitimate democratic disagreements in the country, but always, time and again, by outside interference. He had been educated in England, Germany and China and had been, for the past two years, shadowing the Qatari foreign minister to the US. No one who had been watching him or his father closely for any amount of time was shocked when he called for this oil summit. Kenny had taken more than his fair share of world history and global politics courses to know that this was a great idea with only a sliver of a chance of actually succeeding. But he admired Mohammed’s effort.

And he was damn shocked to find himself here trying to stop someone from killing him.

But he knew all of this already.

Maya moved in his peripheral vision and he turned his head involuntarily, just needing to check in on her. One of the waitresses had parked herself in front of Maya and the two were chatting like old friends, sharing the hors d’oeuvres on the tray in between them. Kenny smiled. And then he remembered something and turned back to the Qatari royal.

“Your sister had a rare form of leukemia, yes?” he asked carefully.

The other man sat up straighter and Kenny watched his fists clench.

“I don’t mean to pry or be insensitive. But I remember reading about it at university.”

He took a deep breath through his nose and nodded tersely.

“She needed a special treatment that she could only get in the US.
